About Us

To most foreigners, the Afrikaans term “Skouervlieg” might not be as lucid as it is to the South African locals. Directly translated to English, this means ‘Shoulder fly’, and this translation really does not explain it as well as the original does. A “Skouervlieg” is a backseat driver. Someone that constantly advises other people about how they should perform the task. Quite irritating… right? Well, this is exactly what sisterhood is like.

Those that have sisters probably agree, those that don’t probably show sympathy to those that do. Its fun having a sister, no doubt. However, I vacillate whether it’s always fun.

I am Mieke Meintjes. A teenage South African girl. My sister, Meliska Meintjes, is my best friend and the cause of most of my headaches. And this… this is our blog. Our journey, and our life.

Our father recently accepted a job position in Prague, The Czech Republic, Europe. And so, as you could imagine we were traumatized, excited and scared all at once. We’re emigrating. And as teenagers who experience things ten times more dramatic than they are, we’re undergoing emotional changes. There are lots of other teenagers undergoing the same situation, and so this blog is for them.

Whilst attempting to get information about Prague, we discovered that the plain and simple things about other cities aren’t available: best grocery stores, local secrets… those kinds of things. And so, we decided that the poor people trying to get information about South Africa, needed to be helped… and that’s where we come in.

This blog is everything South African. This blog is everything teenagers. This blog is tips, DIY’s, emotional changes, and how to survive the brutal world that teenagers must survive as a patriarchal standard. This blog is for travelers, and for basically anyone interested.

Thus, this is a guide, to everything and anything. By two sisters who started a blog called “Skouervlieg”, because we are in the back seat of Life’s bus advising it to go right for a change.
